Two day weekend intensive glass cutting workshop

Heather Gillespie

Cumbria Crystal is the last producer of hand-blown and hand-cut luxury English crystal in Britain.  Cumbria Crystal is famous for producing the highest quality lead crystal & is the crystal of choice for the British Embassies, many Royal Families and Luxury Stores worldwide. Using traditional glassmaking methods, our highly skilled artisans are committed to making traditional & contemporary crystal. The Ulverston factory is on the southern edge of the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors are invited to watch the alchemy of creating exquisite English crystal.

These intensive two day workshops introduce you to the traditional craft of glass cutting on a diamond lathe. The workshops are suitable for people with no experience, or for people wishing to develop their skills. The minimum number of participants is three and the maximum number of participants is six, ensuring you enjoy extremely high levels of personal support and supervision throughout the day. You will be introduced to a range of diamond wheels and shown what they do, how they are used, health & safety issues and then supported through a series of practical exercises to develop confidence. Creativity is key & Heather will demonstrate how designs are developed & transferred onto glasses ready for the cutting process. You will learn how to cut various lines, patterns and oval lenses. Two hand blown Cumbria Crystal hi-ball tumblers are included in the cost, as is acid polishing to create the beautiful shine & refractive qualities.

After lunch theory is put into practice & you will develop your own designs & transfer them onto your glasses ready for home use & to show friends. Additional glasses are available at discounted prices on the day should the creative bug take hold! More experienced participants may tailor the day to match their skill levels and personal objectives.

After the course your glass will be polished by the factory staff in a mixture of hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid to bringing them to a high shine. This is a hazardous process so it is done separately.

Your finished creations will be ready for collection about four days after the workshop. If you are unable to collect, courier delivery can be arranged.
