Greeting Card (Square): Glass Melting in a Furnace: CARD-SQ-11
On this card you can see is one of the two gas fired glass furnaces at Cumbria Crystal melting the raw materials to make crystal. Each furnace can melts around 500kg of crystal per week at temperatures up to 1450 degrees centigrade.
Using filters to darken the photograph, it is possible to see ‘batch’, the name for the raw materials of glass, just after it has been added to the furnace to start melting, a process which takes two days from start to finish.
