Hoad Monument (officially called the Sir John Barrow Monument) is a 100-foot (30 m) tower at the top of the 436-foot (133 m) Hoad Hill, in Ulverston - the home of Cumbria Crystal. Ulverston a picturesque town in the English Lake District, a World Heritage Site. the Monument commemorates Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) who was born in there.
Sir John Barrow was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. He travelled to China and South Africa as a diplomat and held the post of Second Secretary to the Admiralty between 1804 and 1845. The Barrow Peninsula is named after him in recognition of his influence. Cumbria Crystal is nestled at the foot of the hill below the Monument.
This photograph was taken from the Bronze Age (c.1400 BC) Stone Circle located on Birkrigg Common about 4 miles from Ulverston town.
